TRC were appointed to supply 162 “like for like” Heritage sash windows and timber casement windows across 12 different buildings on the EastEnders set, following a decision by the BBC to build a modern replica that would be more in keeping with the aesthetics of 21st Century London’s East End.

Built in 1984, the iconic Albert Square and surrounding buildings that make up the EastEnders set were initially expected to last for just two years. But over three decades – and many Queen Vic landlords later – the set was still standing. However, years of wear and tear meant the buildings were no longer fit for purpose, which caused expensive filming delays and maintenance costs.

With over 25 years of experience in the manufacturing of bespoke heritage windows, TRC was chosen to supply 162 “like for like” heritage sash windows and timber casement windows with solid glazing bars and putty fronting for 12 different buildings on the set – with the ultimate goal being that viewers would be totally unaware that the beloved Queen Vic and surrounding buildings were actually brand new versions.

The Project

Wates Construction was appointed by the BBC in September 2018 to build a modern replica of the EastEnders set, with the aim being to overcome production issues, save the corporation nearly half a million Pounds a year, and enable the programme to be filmed in high definition for the first time ever.

As the UK’s most experienced window company when it comes to the design, supply and installation of “Like for Like” slim profile single and double glazed sash windows and casement windows, TRC was the ideal supplier for this project.

Working closely with project architects Jenkins Design Services, TRC supplied  “like for like” replacements for the existing windows in Albert Square, which included 162 custom-built bespoke slim box single glazed heritage sash windows, spring balance heritage sash windows, and single glazed heritage casement windows, all replicating the current windows in precise detail.

Project Value £350K

Contract length 4 months

For this project, TRC supplied 20 different bespoke window types, in addition to designing a bespoke 63mm reduced slim box, creating 14 different sash horn designs, and using 4mm toughened single glass panes, all to perfectly match the original windows.

By combining custom-made, slim low-sight line units with 24mm solid-through glazing bars, TRC retained the visual integrity of traditional box sash windows, while meeting the demanding thermal and acoustic specifications required by current building regulations.

In conclusion, TRC’s expertise in heritage window design and manufacturing proved to be the perfect fit for breathing new life into the EastEnders set. By meticulously replicating the original windows, TRC ensured a seamless transition for viewers while enabling the show to continue captivating audiences for years to come. This project stands as a testament to TRC’s ability to blend tradition with innovation, resulting in a win-win for both the BBC and fans of the iconic soap opera.
