A key element of this phase involved developing a bespoke methodology for timber window refurbishment, carefully aligned with the client’s conservation and performance requirements. The works comprised the repair, restoration and modification of existing timber windows, along with the provision of like-for-like replacement sashes where retention was not feasible. The project incorporated the production of Control Samples and Benchmark Windows, each subjected to stringent quality assurance inspections, ensuring the refurbishment methodology met the required conservation standard before being rolled out across the wider scheme.

Refurbishment works included comprehensive cleaning of frames and glazing, the removal of debris, excess paint and protective films, and the replacement of missing or damaged historic glass with carefully matched alternatives. Sashes were reshaped and realigned, sash cords renewed, and mechanical components overhauled to restore smooth operation, with each refurbished window fitted with a Draftfix draught-proofing system to improve thermal performance and usability.

Timber repairs were carried out using a combination of established RepairCare techniques, modern splicing methods and bespoke timber inserts, with carefully selected timber species ensuring compatibility and minimising the loss of original material. Conservation joints were introduced to improve durability, defective putty was replaced with a modern, long-lasting alternative, and all repaired surfaces were finished using a Dulux Weathershield water-based system – including primer, undercoat and topcoat – for a durable, environmentally responsible finish. Sympathetic repairs were also carried out to stone cills, along with brickwork repointing and mastic sealing to prevent future water ingress.
