Currie Lodge is a striking Victorian villa with a rich historical background, originally forming part of the Northern Hospital for patients with contagious diseases. Built during the 19th century, the property reflects the architectural elegance of its era, featuring traditional sash windows, ornate detailing, and robust masonry typical of institutional buildings from that period.
Over the years, Currie Lodge has been repurposed into residential dwellings, but it retains many of its original features and charm. The building’s heritage significance and continued use as occupied housing made sensitive restoration essential, particularly in preserving its period character while upgrading to modern performance standards.
The project
TRC Contracts were appointed by Buxton Building Contractors Ltd to carry out the specialist replacement of 66 double glazed, Easy clean sash windows in hardwood at Currie Lodge – a Victorian villa steeped in history and formerly part of the Northern Hospital for patients with contagious diseases. Working within the constraints of occupied dwellings, TRC undertook a comprehensive programme of surveying, removal, manufacture, and installation over a 24-week subcontract.
The new windows were carefully matched to the original design in both style and detail, while seamlessly integrating modern performance features such as tilt-in cleaning, solar control glazing, and PAS 24:2016 certified security enhancements.
Specialist Window Replacement with Heritage Sensitivity
TRC Contracts carried out a full-service window replacement package, which included surveying, removal, manufacturing, and installation of 66 double glazed Easy clean sash windows in hardwood. Each new window was meticulously crafted to replicate the original style, maintaining the property’s historical proportions, glazing patterns, bar placement, and traditional aesthetics.
The windows were finished in traffic white (RAL 9016) and incorporated high-performance features such as solar control glazing, enhanced thermal efficiency with a U-value of 1.5 W/m²K, and PAS 24:2016 certified security for ground floor and accessible units. Designed with TRC’s tilt-in Easy clean sash system, the new windows also provided modern convenience and ventilation while respecting the building’s heritage.
Blending Tradition with Innovation
TRC Contracts’ Easy clean sash windows were a key enhancement to the Currie Lodge project, offering the perfect blend of traditional aesthetics and modern functionality. Designed to replicate the original sash window style, these units maintained the heritage appearance of the building while introducing innovative tilt-in technology that allows the sashes to slide and tilt inward for easy cleaning – ideal for an occupied residential setting.
With high-performance double glazing, improved thermal insulation, and discreet trickle ventilation, the windows significantly boosted energy efficiency and comfort. Their PAS 24:2016 certification also ensured enhanced security, making them a practical and secure choice without compromising the property’s period charm.
