TRC Contracts were appointed by MYCO Contracts Limited to deliver a specialist window and door replacement package at Atlantic House, 21 St Albans Grove, Kensington & Chelsea, a landmark project transforming a five-storey building into a modern junior school for Thomas's Day School.

Thomas’s Day School is part of the Thomas’s family of schools, one of London’s most respected independent school groups, known for providing exceptional learning environments that nurture creativity, confidence and academic excellence.

The completed five-storey facility provides 23 purpose-built classrooms alongside specialist accommodation for science, IT, art, dance and music. These internal spaces are complemented by thoughtfully designed external areas – including a playscape, hard and soft landscaping – that support play, creativity and pupil wellbeing.

Balancing heritage character with modern educational standards

Working in close collaboration with architects Ackroyd Lowrie, TRC Contracts developed a comprehensive retrofit solution that retained the building’s period character while achieving modern standards of thermal performance, acoustics, security and regulatory compliance. A core objective was ensuring that every window and door set integrated seamlessly with the existing architectural fabric, delivering contemporary performance without compromising the visual integrity that the conservation area demands.

Completed over a five-month programme, the scope encompassed the design, manufacture and installation of 150 bespoke traditional timber spring balance sash windows, fire-rated glazed screens, and 10 single and double door sets, all carefully specified to respect the architectural sensitivity of the De Vere Conservation Area.

Heritage meets high performance

For the North and South elevations of Atlantic House, TRC Contracts designed, manufactured and installed bespoke hardwood spring balance sash windows engineered to deliver exceptional performance within a conservation context. Each unit achieves a thermal performance of 1.4 W/m²K, an acoustic rating of 36 dB for improved comfort within the busy urban setting, and enhanced security to PAS 24:2016 standards. Performance testing confirms Class 4 air permeability and 4A watertightness, ensuring long-term durability and resilience against weather exposure, while a carefully specified G-value of 0.4 provides effective solar gain control.

The result is a solution that demonstrates how traditional window aesthetics can be successfully united with modern performance criteria – delivering an outcome that is compliant, durable and visually appropriate for a sensitive heritage-led educational scheme. It is a testament to TRC Contracts’ expertise in bridging the gap between conservation requirements and the demands of contemporary building regulations, ensuring that Atlantic House serves its young pupils for generations to come.
