We use the brand of sash window draughtproofing for a few reasons. First and foremost is the quality of the product, as it’s comprehensively tested for air tightness, water permeability and air resistance. We’ve found that Draftfix is particularly suited to our restoration projects, and the happiness of our customers is top of our list.
Need some tech details? The Draftfix system typically uses a Weatherpile with central fin fixed into a plastic carrier, which is rebated into the bead. The Weatherpile prevents dust and dirt ingress, and the central fin contributes to air tightness. All the seals are rebated into the beading, which means no unsightly, protruding, face-fixed seals.
We know lots about this, so please ask if you need more spec!
Draughtproofing isn’t just about keeping the cold out. Our expert sash window restoration specialists add insulation via hidden, rebated sealing strips in key places around the window, putting a stop to rattles too.
As a result, air leakage is reduced by up to 50%, and the sash opens and closes smoothly with minimum effort.
And with better insulation comes better thermal performance, as well as fewer occurrences of dirt, dust and rain ingress. That’s complete insulation from cold, leaks, and premature timber decay and damage.
Our comprehensive draughtproofing ticks all the boxes (and fills all the gaps).
To stop draughts from a sash window, you can fill gaps and cracks with flexible filler and re-putty any loose or worn glazing. Painting over the repaired areas helps create a seal, though this method can make the window stay permanently closed. More reversible options, like weatherstripping or sash cords and brushes, can reduce draughts while keeping the window functional.
Modern sash windows can achieve a reasonably airtight seal. While their sliding mechanism means some small gaps are necessary, well-designed weather stripping helps prevent excessive air leakage.
