The Victoria Building, completed in 1888, stands as a prominent symbol of Blackburn’s industrial heritage and civic pride. Originally conceived through an architectural competition, the building was constructed as a Technical College, funded by philanthropic donations and public subscription to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.
Its ornate façade and intricate stained-glass windows showcase themes of science, technology, the arts, and manufacturing – reflecting the town’s industrial achievements during the late 19th century. Recognised for its architectural and historical significance, the building was granted Grade II listed status in March 1984, ensuring its preservation as a valued landmark within the Blackburn College campus.
The project
TRC Contracts were tasked with the sensitive refurbishment and upgrade of the building’s original sash and casement windows, ensuring the preservation of the Victoria Building’s historic character. Working within the constraints of its Grade II listed status, TRC delivered a cost-effective and efficient solution that balanced restoration with performance improvements.
The scope of work included the installation of concealed draughtproofing, replacement of glazing, timber repairs, and renewal of ironmongery. Throughout the project, great care was taken to retain and conserve as much of the original window features as possible, in keeping with the building’s heritage and architectural integrity.
Blending tradition with performance through heritage window solutions
TRC Contracts’ heritage sash and casement windows played a vital role in the successful restoration of the Victoria Building. Designed to meet the demands of listed and conservation properties, TRC’s sash windows combine traditional aesthetics with modern performance, featuring slim sightlines and concealed technology to improve energy efficiency without compromising on authenticity.
Similarly, our heritage casement windows offer a timeless design with the option for bespoke detailing, making them ideal for matching original window styles. On this project, TRC’s expertise and precision-engineered products enabled the careful refurbishment of existing windows, blending seamlessly with the building’s historic fabric while enhancing comfort, functionality, and longevity.
