Located on the historic Westcliff in Preston, the properties at 46–50 form part of a distinguished terrace recognised for its period architecture and heritage value. While not all addresses are individually listed, 48 Westcliff is officially designated Grade II by Historic England, underscoring the architectural and historic importance of this area.
Dating from the early to mid-19th century, buildings along Westcliff commonly feature traditional sash windows, classical proportions, and ornate detailing, characteristic of high-quality residential design from the period. The conservation status of the street reflects its importance within Preston’s wider historic landscape.
The project
As main contractor for the project, TRC Contracts were responsible for the comprehensive refurbishment of 36 original timber sash windows and the replacement of ageing aluminium units. The existing aluminium windows were upgraded using the Reynaers SL 38 system – a slimline, high-performance solution suited to sensitive heritage environments.
The £100,000 project was delivered over eight weeks, with all work carried out in line with listed building and conservation area regulations, ensuring the continued protection of the building’s historic character.
Blending heritage detail with modern performance
TRC’s heritage sash windows were a key component in restoring the building’s original appearance. Expertly repaired and refurbished, these traditional vertical sliding units were carefully preserved to maintain the architectural rhythm of the façade.
In parallel, the replacement of non-original aluminium windows with the Reynaers SL 38 system provided a modern solution that complemented the building’s style while significantly improving energy efficiency and performance. Combining craftsmanship with innovation, TRC’s window solutions helped deliver a successful balance between conservation and contemporary living.
