Acoustic Sash Windows

As the UK’s leading timber window supplier, TRC Contracts has invested heavily in independent acoustic testing, so you get definitive, certified answers, not estimates.

Our sash and casement windows are fully tested and certified to the following acoustic ratings in accordance with ISO 10140-2:2021:

33dB | 36dB | 37dB | 38dB | 39dB | 40dB

Acoustic Sash Window Solutions for Heritage and Urban Projects

TRC Contracts’ Acoustic Sash Windows combine traditional aesthetics with enhanced sound insulation performance for sensitive urban and heritage settings. Developed in consultation with acoustic specialists and informed by project-specific noise data, our solutions are designed to meet stringent internal criteria in line with BS 8233 and local authority guidance.

We work collaboratively with architects and specifiers to balance conservation requirements, carbon considerations and ventilation strategy with robust, evidence-based acoustic performance.

Façade Performance Strategy

Measured site data consistently shows significant variation in exposure between principal road façades and screened rear elevations. Rather than defaulting to maximum specification across an entire building, TRC Contracts develops a façade-zoned approach.

Protected or courtyard elevations may only require standard thermal double glazing to satisfy internal criteria. Moderate exposure façades can often be addressed with enhanced asymmetric glazing builds. On heavily trafficked elevations, particularly where conservation constraints limit rebate depth, the most robust solution is typically a primary acoustic sash combined with a secondary internal pane.

This strategy delivers compliance without unnecessary cost or embodied carbon.

Acoustic, Ventilation and Overheating

Night-time noise levels on primary façades can restrict reliance on openable windows for purge or cooling. Where LAmax events and external LAeq levels exceed internal criteria, mechanical ventilation solutions should be integrated at design stage to avoid late-stage compliance risk.

TRC Contracts coordinates window specification with ventilation strategy, ensuring acoustic performance, overheating compliance (including TM59 considerations) and carbon targets are aligned.

Where purge opening is required, a staggered sash arrangement can help reduce direct sound transmission by creating a tortuous acoustic path. However, this should be considered part of a coordinated environmental strategy rather than a standalone solution.

At tender stage, we review acoustic reports, façade zoning drawings and planning conditions to provide a fully coordinated acoustic sash window package – technically sound, commercially robust and ready for delivery.
